Designing UX research to craft compelling stories

November 30, 2022 9:00 AM
PDT - Timezone

You have a decision to make, an investment to secure, a prioritization to inform or an experience to build. We’ll talk about how you can design research to evoke the right stories that will be most impactful for these needs.

We’ll learn a framework that you can apply across professional contexts, starting with your desired result and impact. We’ll work backwards from here to craft the research and stories that will help enable your outcome.

MODULE

:

Mental models for storytelling & effective collaboration

December 7, 2022 9:00 AM
PDT - Timezone

Being able to tell a compelling story about a user problem and advocate for a solution in a way that proves its value and impact on the company doesn't always come easy. How do you help people understand the problem space and how do you get alignment so that you can better make decisions?

Join Alan for an interactive session to help you learn storytelling frameworks for how to communicate user needs, so that you can work towards common language in problem solving.

MODULE
3
:

How to get buy-in with a great story

December 14, 2022 9:00 AM
PDT - Timezone

You've got a great idea, but you need to convince your team that it's worth exploring. Learn to pair user problems with concrete business outcomes and turn data points into a narrative that helps you build an all-star support team.

Figure out how to tailor your story to align with different stakeholder priorities and audiences. Use language to find the fun in your proposal, then watch your dream become a success story.

MODULE

:

Impactful storytelling in design critiques

December 21, 2022 9:00 AM
PDT - Timezone

Design systems critique sessions at Pinterest are open to all designers and engineers from different product areas, enabling cross-functional collaboration and diverse perspectives. It isn't just how we determine the success of a design concept but also how we drive our work forward. We've learned that what sets a valuable critique apart is the story we tell and how we engage with our audience. It can be challenging for people who work in completely different product areas to join a cross-functional design critique on a weekly basis to provide helpful feedback if the narrative is not precise.

In this interactive session learn how to perform a design critique by refining your storytelling skills and using words purposefully, focusing on inclusive design best practices. In addition, you will understand how to communicate the problem with clarity in a design critique, and how to engage with your audience by using different storytelling techniques and approaches to better frame the feedback you seek.

Storytelling with data visualization to improve decision-making

January 11, 2023 9:00 AM
PDT - Timezone

Today, billions of people across a wide array of interests rely on data to make critical decisions. Data visualization is a go-to approach because it leverages our natural abilities as humans to see trends, spot patterns, and identify outliers. A good visualization amplifies cognition and improves decision-making.

So the question is this: How do we represent data in a way that provides the same value to everyone, regardless of ability? As a co-author of Material Design’s Data Visualization Guidelines, Kent will discuss Google’s six principles for data visualization and outline how his team applies them at scale to create more inclusive and accessible representations of data that supports rich storytelling and helps people make better design decisions.

Methods to tell better stories in presentations

January 18, 2023 9:00 AM
PDT - Timezone

Presentations help us win our next job and win over stakeholders. They can also give us heartburn. This workshop will cover creating narratives for two common scenarios: the portfolio presentation and the stakeholder review.

Introduce yourself more confidently, give your presentation focus, and learn frameworks to help get you started the next time you have to present.

WEEKLY CURRICULUM

What you will learn

The 6-week curriculum covers tangible ways to tell more compelling stories. Learn from experienced design leaders from Pinterest, Google and Microsoft. We've designed the content to be actionable and the concepts, strategies and frameworks are meant to help you develop practical storytelling skills to more effectively collaborate with your teams.

FAQs

Frequent questions

How does the program work?

Leadership Academy is a 6-week professional growth program investing in the next generation of design leaders. After you apply, your application will be reviewed and you will find out in 5--10 days if you qualify. You'll receive next steps and a link to pay for the program.

When the program starts, you'll get matched with a mentor and a group of 2--3 design peers to for mentorship, accountability and discuss challenges. You'll also join workshops and live sessions (six live sessions, one each week) to learn from experienced design leaders.

Additionally, you'll be part of our Leadership Circle for 12 months. There you'll get to connect with other design leaders, and peers for advice, guidance, accountability, and much more.

What is my time commitment per week to finish the program?

To make the most out of this program recommend to set aside 3 hours a week to attend the workshops, complete the homework. Once every two weeks you'll meet with your mentor and your group.

- Meet with your group: 1 hour/ every two weeks. A total of 3 meetings.
- Attend Live Workshops: 2.5 hour/ week.
- Apply the Concepts: 20 - 30 minutes / week to reflect on materials and practice on your own.

You are welcome to put into it as much time as you can. This is an investment in your career growth.

What time are the workshops?

Most live sessions will happen on Thursdays, Fridays at 9:30am PDT. Click here to convert that time to your own time zone.

There will be 6 live sessions with one per week, for 6 weeks. Although recordings of the talks are available we highly recommend you join live for the full experience.

How much does the program cost?

Attending the program is an investment of $1,200 US which includes access to all workshops from the program and an annual membership to access all content and resources from RETHINK Leadership Circle. If your company would like to purchase 8 or more tickets, please contact us at hello@rethinkhq.com. We can provide an invoice if needed.

Will I be able to expense this to my company?

Yes. Many of our program applicants are able to expense the program tuition to their company. The return on investment compared to a conference or other opportunities is much greater. You get structured content, hands-on learning, lasting community, and actionable strategies to help you develop practical leadership skills for effective collaboration with your cross-functional teams. Contact hello@rethinkhq.com for further questions.

Do you offer certificate of completion?

Yes. A certificate of completion is available after the program. That requires you to attend all 6 live sessions and meet with your small group 3 times over the course of 6 weeks. Contact hello@rethinkhq.com for questions.

Do you offer scholarships?

We offer scholarships for underrepresented groups or people who need financial support to attend. This is possible because of partnership with Pinterest and also kind people who donated to the scholarship fund: Aniruddha Kadam, Al Hertz, Liz Heidner, Shara Rosenbalm. If you need financial support to attend this program please reach out to hello@rethinkhq.com.

How long will I have access to the program resources?

You’ll have lifetime access to the program materials to help you successfully lead and influence at work.

Starting with the 6-week live program, you’ll also have access to Leadership Circle, the talk recordings from the events in the program, member-only events, and our community for ongoing support for a total of 12 months.
