About the event

ABOUT THE TALKS

Trish Ang, Senior front-end Engineer at Slack and Sun Dai, Product Designer at Facebook will discuss the challenges, experiments, and lessons learned while improving the processes for a better cross-functional collaboration on the design systems.

How to scale your process to fit your team

by Trish Ang, Senior Front End Engineer at Slack

What does ownership mean when a design system belongs to everyone at a company? Slack Kit is the product design language used internally at Slack by designers, engineers, and product managers alike. But if everyone owns it, who is on the hook to keep this system focused and evolving in line with the product it serves?

We'll dig into how we set boundaries with our component authors, what our service model looks like, and how we monitor for components going off the rails. Let's walk through some horror stories – like when your brand new component explodes into a frankenstein monster a mere couple months post launch – and shining moments of effective collaboration and well-orchestrated launches – such as dark mode – in our design system's history, and see what learnings we've gleaned along the way.

Design systems team model: a hybrid approach

by Sun Dai - Product Designer Design Systems at Facebook

As your company grows, so is your design system. How to support 15+ unique product teams and their new projects in a sustainable way without compromising the quality of the app, is something the Facebook Design System (FDS) team is constantly iterating on.

In this talk, Sun will share the journey of the Facebook Design Systems team, problems they were facing, things they've tried to make the design system scalable, and their effort to empower product teams to own specialized areas that have app-wide impact.

ABOUT THE DESIGN JAM

This is a live virtual design jam about how to create a flexible design system that supports multiple goals and needs for a better cross-functional collaboration.

During the live design jam session we will

  • Break out into small groups of 3-4 people to set context, and to discuss pain points we face working on design systems.
  • Brainstorm new ideas to tackle these problems through activities commonly used in design sprints.
  • Go through a prioritization exercise to identify the effort and impact of the solutions from the brainstorm.
  • Use a virtual whiteboard collaboration tool. You'll receive an update with the board & guidelines one day before the event.
  • You'll leave this design jam with actionable insights and thought process that you can apply into your own work environment.

SPEAKER

The session will be guided by Sun Dai - Product Designer Design Systems at Facebook.

During the session, Sun will walk us through a series of exercises and a combination of activities applying problem solving processes (Design Thinking, Design Sprints) to help identify and define the pain points quickly, vet with other folks in the industry and prioritize solutions based on identifying the effort and impact of the best solutions.

You'll leave this design jam with actionable insights and thought process that you can apply into your own work environment.
